Upper Rank 6: Gyutaro and Daki
During the Entertainment District Arc, Gyutaro and Daki, the Upper Rank 6 demons, fought against Tanjiro, Tengen Uzui, Inosuke Hashibara, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Nezuko Kamado. Despite being referred to as the “lowly Upper Six” by Igoro Obanai, the battle to defeat them decimated an entire city and forced Tengen into early retirement after losing his left hand and left eye.
Gyutaro was decapitated by Tanjiro with an assist from Tengen, while Daki was beheaded by a joint attack from Zenitsu and Inosuke. Like most demons, their impending demise returned the memories of their lives as humans, and Gyutaro and Daki reaffirmed their love for each other as brother and sister and went to hell together.
The battle against Gyutaro and Daki was intense, and their unique abilities made them formidable opponents. Gyutaro could control threads that he used to create puppets out of humans, while Daki could create illusions that could manipulate the minds of his opponents.
Despite their strength, Tanjiro and the other Demon Slayers were able to defeat them through strategic planning and teamwork. The battle showcased the importance of working together and using each other’s strengths to overcome powerful opponents.
Upper Rank 5: Gyokko
Gyokko was one of the upper-ranked demons who attacked the Swordsmith Village in the Demon Slayer’s Swordsmith Village Arc. He faced off against the Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito. Gyokko was an artist whose pride in his grotesque creations using corpses of those he’d killed ultimately led to his demise.
As a fellow artist, Gyokko became distracted by Haganezuka’s dedication to sword polishing and opted to hold off on finishing off a wounded Muichiro Tokito. Then, he manifested his Mark and effortlessly decapitated Gyokko with his Mist Breathing Seventh Form: Obscuring Clouds.
Unlike other demons, Gyokko didn’t have time to lament his actions or regain his human memories as Muichiro split Gyokko’s decapitated head in half to get him to stop talking.
Upper Rank 4: Hantengu
During the Swordsmith Village Arc, Hantengu was one of the upper-ranked demons who attacked the village. He fought against Tanjiro, Nezuko, Gen, Yashina, Zagawa, and Mitsuri Kanroji. Hantengu was unique in that being decapitated only made him stronger. He split into seven different bodies throughout the battle, making it difficult for Tanjiro and the others to find the real body whose beheading would kill him.
Although Hantengu was defeated by Tanjiro, his forcing Nezuko into the sunlight only for her to survive exposure was the only time in Demon Slayer that Muzan enthusiastically praised one of his demons. Like Gyokko Ontagyu, Hantengu didn’t have much time to reflect upon his human memories as most dying demons do. His corpse was caught in the sunlight immediately after his beheading.
Hantengu’s ability to split into multiple bodies made him a formidable opponent. However, his reliance on this ability ultimately led to his downfall. Despite his strength, Hantengu was unable to defeat Tanjiro and the other demon slayers. His defeat serves as a reminder that even the strongest demons can be defeated with the right strategy and teamwork.
Upper Rank 3: Akaza
During the Infinity Castle Arc of Demon Slayer, Akaza, the Upper Rank 3 demon, proved himself to be a formidable opponent. He faced off against Tanjiro and Giyu Tomiyoka, and his compass needle ability allowed him to predict his opponent’s moves. Even when Tanjiro managed to neutralize the compass needle and decapitate him, Akaza’s headless body continued fighting while his head regenerated.
Akaza’s memories of his human life as a young martial artist named Hakuji were triggered when he was decapitated. He lost his fiancee and teacher when a rival dojo poisoned their well. He became a demon when Kibutsuji came to investigate the demon-level carnage that Hakuji had inflicted on the rival dojo. When Akaza remembered his late fiancee, he became remorseful over the monster he had become and obliterated his own freshly regenerated head, allowing himself to die.
Upper Rank 2: Doma
Doma was one of the upper-ranked demons encountered in the Infinity Castle Arc of Demon Slayer. He was first confronted by the insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho, whom he quickly consumed after her poisons failed to kill him. Inosuke then teamed up with Tanjiro to fight him, but they were no match for him until the 37 kilograms of Wisteria poison he had inadvertently ingested by consuming Shinobu began to melt his body.
After being decapitated by Kanau and Inosuke, Doma experienced the first emotion in his entire life when he met Shinobu in the afterlife, and despite her hatred for him, began to develop a crush on her.
Doma’s backstory revealed that he was once a human named Douma, a member of the Twelve Kizuki and the second strongest demon after Muzan Kibutsuji. He was a member of the Upper Moon Two, and he chose to become a demon so he could live forever and improve his sword skills. Though as he died, he admitted he just wanted to be as strong as his brother, Ryokichi.
Upper Rank 1: Kokushibo
Kokushibo was the final Upper Rank to die during the Demon Slayer’s Infinity Castle Arc. Muichiro, Genya, Sanemi, Shinazugawa, and Gyomei fought together against Kokushibo. Although Muichiro and Genya were no match for him and were killed, Sanemi and Gyomei decapitated Kokoshibo. However, he successfully regenerated his head, just like Akaza had.
Despite his regeneration abilities, the wound from Muichiro’s Burning Red Blade caused Kokushibo’s body to disintegrate. As his body withered away, Kokushibo reflected on his human life as Michikatsu Sugokuni, the twin brother of Ryorichi. Michikatsu always felt inferior to his brother because only Ryorichi could wield the all-powerful Sun Breathing technique.
His story is a tragic reminder of the lengths some will go to achieve power and recognition. Despite his immense strength as an Upper-Rank demon, Kokoshibo’s ultimate demise serves as a cautionary tale of the dangers of obsession and the fleeting nature of power.
Conclusion
The deaths of the upper moons in Demon’s Lair were not only necessary but also tragic. Each demon had its own unique story and personality, and their deaths brought closure to their character arcs. Despite their monstrous nature, some of them were able to regain their human memories and reflect on their past actions before passing away.
The battles against the upper moons were intense and decimated entire cities, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The demon slayers had to use all of their skills and teamwork to defeat them, often at great personal cost. The upper moons’ abilities were formidable, but they were no match for the determination and perseverance of the demon slayers.
